Pigtail connectors play an important role in fiber optic installations. But what exactly is a pigtail and why do you use it? In this article, we explain why they are important and which pigtail connector you should choose, with a focus on SC and LC pigtails.
What is a pigtail?
A pigtail is used to provide fiber optics with a connector. A pigtail is a piece of fiber optics with a pre-mounted connector on one side. The other side of the pigtail is open and is connected to a fiber optic cable. This creates a stable and reliable connection between network equipment.
Specialized equipment is required to connect the pigtail to the fiber optic cable. DINTEK supplies this equipment, but the pigtails can also be attached to the cable by an installer.
Why use a pigtail?
Pigtails offer several advantages:
- Quick installation: you only need to weld one side
- Stable connection: minimal signal loss
- Efficient: saves time with large installations
- Reliable: the connector is already assembled and checked

Which pigtail connector do I need?
The right pigtail connector depends on several factors:
- The type of fiber optic cable: multimode or singlemode
- The desired connector: SC or LC
Multimode or singlemode fiber optic cable
Fiber optic cables are available in two different types: singlemode or multimode. A singlemode fiber optic cable transmits a single straight light signal, suitable for longer distances. A multimode fiber optic cable has a thicker fiber in which the light does reflect within the fiber, a cheaper option for shorter distances.
OM3, OM4 or OS2
Fiber optic cables can be further distinguished in terms of speed, distance, and cable application.
- OM3 (Optical Multimode 3) is suitable for data centers, LAN networks, and storage networks. It has a maximum speed of 10 Gbps over a distance of up to 300 meters.
- OM4 (Optical Multimode 4) is suitable for high-speed data centers and backbone networks. The maximum speed is 40 to 100 Gbps over a distance of 150 meters and 10 Gbps over a distance of up to 550 meters.
- OS2 (Optical Singlemode 2) is suitable for longer distance connections and high-performance networks. It has a maximum speed of 100 Gbps and a maximum distance of 10 kilometers.
SC or LC
- An SC (Subscriber Connector) is a square push-pull connector that is widely used in traditional networks and data centers.
- An LC (Lucent Connector) is a locked connector that takes up little space. Ideal for high-density patch panels and network equipment.
